Why do candles give me a headache?
Candle FAQ. Why do candles give me a headache?
Candles are complex creatures. They're made of only a few ingredients - wax, a wick, and fragrance, but this mean that every ingredient matters. People can have a bad reaction to candles for a few reasons. Here are the most common:
Culprit 1 - The Fragrance
Lots of people think they're allergic to fragrances when they may be reacting to the toxins in the fragrances. Fragrance oils can contain chemicals that trigger migraines, headaches, sneezing, and more. For example, you may get a headache from a lavender scented candle because of the chemicals, but you might not get a headache from dried lavender.
Our fragrance blends are phthalate free, paraben free, and cruelty free. We use a mix of fragrance oils and essential oils to give you the best fragrance throw (what you smell) from natural fragrances.
Culprit 2 - The Wax
Most candles are made from paraffin wax. This type of wax is made from petroleum as a by-product of making gasoline. When it burns it releases toxins and creates soot. Paraffin wax is inexpensive, so it's popular among candlemakers; They can buy it in bulk and sell candles at a cheap price, which consumers love (who doesn't love a cheap candle?).
We use a vegan blend of natural apricot and coconut, and a minuscule amount of highly refined food-grade paraffin wax. Gifts By Birdie's candles are tiny but mighty because the wax burns slowly - in our burn tests we estimate ~7 hours of burn time per ounce of wax. This means your 4oz candle can burn for 25+ hours.
If you get headaches or migraines from candles, we also offer an unscented candle so you can still enjoy the cozy crackle of the wooden wicks without any added fragrances.
