How to burn a candle
You might be thinking "umm, don't you just light the wick?" Well, yes. And no. First and foremost, you want to burn your candle SAFELY.
Secondly, you want to get the most your of your scented candle, especially if you felt like it was a luxury candle. Candles are everywhere. Nice candles are not. If you're going to splurge on a really nice candle, here's how to make the most of it, especially the burn time.
Have you ever bought a candle that said a certain burn time on the label and when you burned it, got way less time than that? Here are common mistakes people make that ruin a candle's suggested burn time.
1- Your wick is too long. The longer the wick, the taller the flame. The taller the flame (combustion), the more wax (ignition) gets used. Keep your wick trimmed to .25" to get the best performance. This is also a safety feature - the longer the wick, the taller the flame, the more likely it is to come in contact with something in its surroundings. Use a wick trimmer or nail clipper to keep your wicks neatly trimmed.
2- You're burning your candle for longer than 4 hours at a time. The hotter the wax, the faster the combustion. Once your vessel heats up, everything gets hotter. Glass conducts more heat than a ceramic vessel, so our candles in glass jars will get hotter faster than our specialty and limited edition ceramic vessels. A good rule is to keep your burns to 1 hour per vessel inch in diameter.
3- You're burning the same candle every day. This one isn't a hard and fast rule, but I do find that it makes a difference. When the wax is heated, it gets softer. The longer you wait between burns, the longer the wax will last because it has a chance to harden between melting.
4- Your candle is lit in a drafty spot. Drafts and breezes near a candle flame are
A- Dangerous
B- Wasteful. Imagine you're driving your car in a zigzag motion all day. You'd be a chaos demon AND you'd use up way more fuel. Same with your candles.
